pope: UR DOING IT WRONG

My absolute favourite line from the Telegraph's continued coverage of the decision by the Vatican to welcome married Anglican priests (but, obviously, still no homos):

Anglican congregations who pride themselves on being more Catholic than the Pope will be able to carry on celebrating Mass in antique vestments, in sanctuaries behind traditional altar rails, to the accompaniment of motets sung by a professionally trained choir.
Because if there's one area where the Pope has been letting his side down, it's in a lack of antique vestments, elaborate churches and carefully arranged choral music.

Now unless I have got things badly wrong, I had concluded from the contacts I have had with the Anglican high church and the anglo catholics that the bulk of them are gay, even camp. I suppose on the one hand accommodation with Rome might prove, shall we say more authentic religiously but on the other hand, the Roman Catholic view on homosexuality would make them most unwelcome.

Richard,

Most of the high liturgy types in the Catholic Church - and yes, there are a number - are gay/camp. Just go to any conservative, Latin mass/lace/pretty vestment supporting Catholic student society at any university and you'll find a group of smug, contemptuous, rigid, right-wing in the closet males. Or just go somewhere that is very conservative/pre-Vat 2 Catholic Church and look around you and up at the sanctuary.

The Anglo-Catholics will be most welcome amongst that lot, mark my words. For the rest of us, it's their right-wing, intolerant politics that will make them and that whole wing of the Church unbearable. Catholic social teaching, anyone? Religion isn't just about how much lace you wear and whether you say mass with your back to the people.

As for the Torygraph, places like the Oratory already do that kind of mass - the ACs aren't bringing in anything new. They have Damian Thompson *cringe* - why didn't the writer run it by him before publishing?

xx
